The Good Side of March

March can be heartbreaking.

When you’re in post-secondary school, March is a long month.  You’re too old for March Break, jacket-less weather is just out of reach, Daylight savings steals an hour of your life, every last assignment is due, and final exams are just around the corner.  And this March, there are no stat holidays (at least not in Ontario), so you won’t have a happy excuse to spend time with friends and family.  Think about it too much and March is downright heartbreaking.  Just look at the photo of what happened to the LRC’s heart model on Monday.

There are, however, many good things about March.

  1. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17.  It’s even on a Saturday this year!  This also means that shamrock shakes are back at McDonald’s!
  2. It’s March Madness!  Even if you’re not a fan of college basketball, there’s typically some interesting additions to the sports highlight reel.  Unfortunately for March, the championship game isn’t until April 2.
  3. Throughout the month and beyond, it’s Rrroll Up the Rim at Tim Hortons.  I know how much coffee students drink, so I’m thinking this is a good thing (if you ignore the higher volume of caffeine being consumed and the increased number of cups that end up at landfills).
  4. March 20th is the first day of spring.  In Toronto, you don’t even have to wait until you wake up for it to be officially spring because the Equinox is at 1:14am this year.
  5. March 14th is Pi Day!

So I hope you enjoy March as much as any other month.  Soon enough exams will be over and it’ll be a glorious summer.

Family Day & Reading Week Hours

One month down.  Many more tests and assignments left to go.  On the bright side, there’s a public holiday and a little break from classes this month.

Family Day is Feb 20.
The LRC will be closed for the long weekend, February 18-20.

Reading Week is Feb 20-24.
From Feb 21-24 the LRC will open 8am-6pm.

If you borrow books from the LRC, don’t forget to renew them.  Regular loan periods apply during Reading Week.

January 2012 Update: Catalogue, Carpet, and Books for You

It’s January.  It’s 2012.  It’s really winter now.  It’s a little sad that the holidays are over but as snow blankets the town we get another fresh start this school year.  Some fresh and new items in the LRC are listed below.

Polaris Catalogue Updated

Our catalogue, Polaris, was upgraded from version 3 to 4.  Polaris is where you go to search the availability of books in the LRC and renew books you’ve checked out.  Users familiar with Polaris might notice that keyword searching is easier now that autocomplete is available and you now have a few options when sorting through your reading history.

New Carpet

From the moment you step off the elevator, you’re bound to notice the new carpet.  Red carpet no longer floods the second floor but there’s still some around if you’re a fan.

Giveaway Books

Outside the LRC is a table of old textbooks, novels, and magazines we’re giving away.  Take a look and you might find something right for you.

Hours Reminder

We’re now on Winter Semester Hours.  Monday-Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-7pm, Saturday/Sunday 12-5pm.  We’re closed long weekends and hours will be reduced during Reading Week,  but we’re open every day for the rest of January.

End of Year Hours

The final exams of the semester will come to an end at 5pm today.  Then there’s the marking, waiting for marks, flights to catch, presents to wrap, and some sleep to fit in before the end of the year.  Whatever you’re up to, enjoy your break! We’ll see you bright and early on Monday, January 2, 2012 – the Learning Resource Centre will open at 8am.
